Technology Journal Blog 2

This video clip was very interesting and informational to me. It was well worth the hour to sit and watch it. First of all, this guy gave up his job to start a business that he didn't even know what was going to happen with it. That takes guts right there to make a career change, although I am glad he did this so that his business could help students like me day in and day out. I pretty much knew about all the illegal downloading of music and movies because that is most popular thing going on right now, but it was interesting to know about all the court fines and money that goes with illegal downloading. If someone ever gets caught the best thing to do is settle for the $4-5,000 fine because one would save a lot more money in the end. I also knew a lot about plaigarism and such because one of my english classes in the class, we spent like 2 weeks on determining what is plaigirising and what isn't. I liked how he incorporated examples he has heard of and taken care of through his work. They were real life situations and can happen to anybody if the right percautions aren't taken. Another interesting thing he talked about was the different websites for writing essays. They don't have a phone number on their website or they have a phone number, but it's not a real one so one can't get a hold of them and keep getting charged. I also never knew that there was a website that teachers can go to and check a students paper to see if any part of the paper is copied from another source. The really creepy thing he talked about was the online stalking, harrassment, and privacy. It creeps me out, but was also good to know that people can pretty much look up anything or anyone on the internet. I am definitely not putting any personal information on the web so the 40,000 predators on the internet searching for their next target won't know anything about me or my personal life. Overall, this was a very good presentation and i'm glad there are people out there informing students and others about what goes on through the internet. He told the real truth about what goes on and is trying to prevent someone from getting in trouble, or even worse, hurt or killed.

  1. The Internet is one of the most useful inventions of the 20th century; however, with this invention comes the need to learn how to use it responsibly. In my opinion, the best words of advice that C.L. Lindsay offered during his presentation was "If it is illegal in the real world, then it is illegal on the Internet." His second most important piece of advice: Fair and legal are not the same thing. Words to live by each time we click on our computers.

I was glad he mentioned TurnItIn. There is definitely controversy about TurnItIn here at UIS. Many students feel that the company is making money off of work that they create. And that furthermore, a good professor should be able to tell when a student is cheating without resorting to third-party programs.

While much of what he said was common sense, one thing I learned was that you could be sued based on your IP address. That's scary.

I'm glad you enjoyed his speech and found it worth your time. I enjoy it every time I watch it!
