Chapter 1 Video Response

After viewing this short clip I observed some standards from the NETS Student Standards in our textbook from pages 12-13. These standards included that students demonstrated a sound understanding of the nature and operation of technology systems by knowing that the calculator was going to do the work for them. I didn't really see if all the students were proficient with the calculator because I didn't know if all of them did the problem correctly. Students used the calculator to enhance learning, increase productivity, and promote creativity by seeing the commutative property being used through a calculator rather than on paper is a different way of approaching the problem. The students didn't interact or communicate with one another only the calculator and listening to what the teacher was telling them. The students used technology to process data and report results from working out their math problem. The last one that I observed was students used the technology resources for solving problems and making informed decisions. They did this by solving the problem using the calculator and then making a decision of whether they understood and if the answer seemed correct to them. These are the only thing that I seemed to observe because it was a short clip and was a little distracted by her teaching methods. I would do things differently if I taught this lesson. First of all, the children seemed confused from the very beginning. They all had blank stares on their faces and were looking around to seek help or more information. I would slow down to make sure everyone is on the same page before I started. Also before moving to the calculator, I would go over what the commutative property is to make sure everyone knows what we're about to dive into, then use the calculator to show as an example to the lesson, and then go back to the definition of commutative property to see the relation between the definition and example. I would also have the calculator in my possession to direct the classroom in an orderly manner.

  1. Great job on your first blog, Bailey! I know that identifying standards is not a terribly exciting way to kick off the semester, but it is a skill that will help us later on.

I think that technology should not be used just for the sake of using it - and personally, I kind of felt like the instructor pushed the calculators onto the students a little early, too. They seemed to struggle with the concept and the technology. It's one of the reasons why I love teaching this class - we focus on the integration as much as the tools. As with any tool, technology has its place in the classroom. It can be a blessing or a curse...sometimes both in the same day!

I like to use these videos to showcase examples of using technology in the classroom. They aren't always 'this is how you should do it' videos. Like this one, there is certainly room for improvement. But honestly, I admire any teacher willing to be recorded! And the videos give me a chance to showcase integration strategies that I would have shown in an on-campus course.

    Keep up the good work!
